The word means rebirth, and scholars of the time looked back to ancient Greece and Rome for ideas about art, science and government. Wealthy families like the Medici of Florence paid artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Artists studied the human body and used perspective to make flat paintings look deep. The new focus on human potential was called humanism.
