Should high schools require a course in personal finance? They should. In one national survey, only about half of adults could answer basic questions about interest and inflation (Hale 4). Students already learn algebra; a finance course would show them how a 20% credit card rate makes a $500 balance grow when it isn't paid. Some argue that families should teach these skills at home. However, not every family has the time or knowledge, and a required course gives every student the same start.
