Middle schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. First, teenagers' body clocks shift as they grow, so many can't fall asleep until around 11 p.m. Doctors say students our age need 8 to 10 hours of sleep, but early bus times make that nearly impossible. Second, schools that have moved their start times later have reported better attendance and fewer students falling asleep in class. Some families worry about later sports practices, but schedules can be adjusted. Our health should come first.
