Everything around you is made of matter, and all matter is made of atoms. Atoms are so small that a single grain of sand holds more than a billion billion of them. Each atom has a center called the nucleus, made of protons and neutrons, with electrons moving around it. An element is a substance made of only one kind of atom, such as gold, oxygen or carbon. Scientists know of 118 elements, and they arrange them in a chart called the periodic table.
