Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, and potential energy is stored energy. A skater at the top of a ramp has a lot of potential energy. As the skater rolls down, it turns into kinetic energy, and the skater speeds up. Energy is never created or destroyed; it only changes form. Some of it always turns into heat through friction, which is why a skateboard eventually slows down and stops.
