According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC by twin brothers named Romulus and Remus. Over hundreds of years, it grew from a small town on the Tiber River into an empire that stretched from Britain to Egypt. At first, Rome was a republic. Citizens elected officials called consuls to lead, and a council called the Senate gave advice. Later, emperors took control, and Augustus became the first emperor in 27 BC.
