Ancient Egypt grew up along the Nile, the longest river in Africa. Each year, the river flooded and left behind rich black soil, so farmers could grow wheat and barley in the middle of a desert. Egyptians called their kings pharaohs and believed they were gods on Earth. To honor them, workers built huge stone pyramids as tombs. The Great Pyramid at Giza was built more than 4,500 years ago and stood about 481 feet tall.
