An ecosystem is all the living and nonliving things in one area and the ways they affect each other. A pond is a good example. Sunlight, water and mud are nonliving parts. Algae and water plants use sunlight to make food. Insects and tadpoles eat the plants, fish eat the insects, and herons eat the fish. When living things die, decomposers such as bacteria break them down and return nutrients to the water.
