The Nile is about 4,130 miles long, and about 95% of Egypt's people live close to its banks. In ancient times, the river's yearly flood brought water and fresh soil to the fields. Scribes measured each field and recorded how much grain each farmer owed the pharaoh. Today, the Aswan High Dam, finished in 1970, holds back the flood. It makes electricity and stores water for dry years, but the rich soil that once fed the fields now settles behind the dam instead.
